Ted Cruz and wife finished meal in peace after protesters left, restaurant owner says

Sen. Ted Cruz and his wife Heidi finished their meal in peace after protesters left the Fiola restaurant in Washington, D.C., earlier this week, the restaurant owner said Tuesday evening.

Initial reports stated that the Texas Republican and his wife were run out of the restaurant by protesters chanting, “We believe survivors,” in reference to the sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Videos posted on Twitter by Smash Racism DC showed protesters demanding to know Mr. Cruz’s position on the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh. The antifa group, who claimed the senator was “chased” out of the restaurant, was later suspended from Twitter for declaring Republicans “are not safe” in public.

The owner and chef of Fiola, Fabio Trabocchi, told CNN reporter Kate Bennett in a statement that the couple was not run out of the restaurant but in fact came back to enjoy their meal once the protesters took off.

“Last night, protesters entered Fiola with the apparent purpose of confronting one of our guests,” the statement read. “Recognizing that there was potential for escalation, our stellar management team immediately diffused the situation. Per our policy for events of this nature, the police were called and the guest escorted to privacy — our highest priority is always the well-being of our customers. When the situation resolved a few minutes later, our guests returned to thank the staff for their support and to finish their exceptional meal.”
