Butler man arrested after threatening to assassinate President Trump

Federal officials said Friday a Butler County man is facing charges after threatening to murder President Donald Trump and other federal officials.

Shawn Monper, 32, has been charged with making threats to assault and murder President Trump, other U.S. officials, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi praised the efforts of law enforcement in apprehending Monper. "I want to applaud the outstanding and courageous investigative work of the FBI and the Butler Township Police Department, who thankfully identified and apprehended this individual before he could carry out his threats against President Trump’s life and the lives of other innocent Americans," said Bondi. "Rest assured that whenever and wherever threats of assassination or mass violence occur, this Department of Justice will find, arrest, and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law and seek the maximum appropriate punishment."

Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti for the Western District of Pennsylvania joined Bondi in announcing the charges.

The federal criminal complaint revealed that the FBI National Threat Operations Section received an emergency disclosure on April 8 regarding threats posted to YouTube by a user named "Mr Satan." The investigation linked the threatening statements, made between January 15 and April 5, to Monper's residence.

Monper allegedly sought and obtained a firearms permit shortly after Trump's inauguration. In February 2025, Monper commented using his "Mr Satan" account, "I have bought several guns and been stocking up on ammo since Trump got in office." In March 2025, he further commented, "Eventually im going to do a mass shooting," and later, "I have been buying 1 gun a month since the election, body armor, and ammo."

The complaint detailed several threatening statements made by Monper, including a February 17, 2025, post advocating violence against Trump and other officials, and a March 4, 2025, threat to "assassinate him myself" during a YouTube video titled "Live: Trump’s address to Congress." Additional threats were made against ICE agents in March and April 2025.

Monper was arrested on April 9 by the FBI with assistance from the Butler Township Police Department. He was ordered detained on April 10, pending preliminary and detention hearings scheduled for April 14.

The FBI and Butler Township Police Department are continuing their investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan J. McKenna is prosecuting the case.
