A Bloomberg poll released today is sending shockwaves across television and online media. Donald Trump has taken a 5 percent lead over Hillary Clinton in the key battleground state of Ohio among likely voters.
What fueled this massive shift? Millennials.
Not only has Trump gained millennial support — Hillary has lost significant support to Libertarian nominee Gov. Gary Johnson. Bloomberg said, “The poll suggests Johnson may be taking some support from younger voters that might traditionally go to a Democrat. Among those under 35 years old, Johnson is getting support from 22 percent in a four-way race, with the remainder splitting fairly evenly between Clinton and Trump, 36 percent to 33 percent.”
With Trump trailing Clinton by just 3 percent, he is statically tied, as the margin of error with the millennial section of the poll is 8 percent.
In an August 21 YouGov poll of likely Ohio voters, Trump was winning just 19 percent of voters under age 30, Johnson was winning 12 percent, and Clinton was winning 57 percent. While Bloomberg measured under-35 voters, this still shows a massive shift in less than a month: Clinton support tumbling, and Trump and Johnson surging.
