RNC officials: No plans to ban guns in permitted areas

Despite security concerns, Republican National Convention officials said Sunday they have no plans to thwart gun license holders from bringing their weapons to the grounds near the convention site.

"There are a number of people coming to execute their First Amendment right and we are going to be supportive of that," Jeff Larson, the CEO of the convention, told reporters.

Stephen Loomis, president of Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association, on Sunday called on Gov. John Kasich to suspend the state's open carry law in Cleveland after three police officers were killed and three others wounded by masked shooters on Sunday morning in Baton Rouge.

But Larson dismissed concerns that Ohio's open carry law would make the convention less safe.

Guns are not permitted on the immediate perimeter of Quicken Loans Arena but they are allowed in protest zones within the event site.
