President Obama will become the first sitting president to ever visit Hiroshima, Japan, since the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb in 1945.
Ben Rhodes, Obama's national security adviser, confirmed the president will make the visit Tuesday in a blog post for Medium.
"Given recent travel to Hiroshima by our Ambassador Caroline Kennedy and Secretary of State John Kerry, as well as the city's role in hosting the G-7 Ministerial in April, we believe that this is the appropriate moment for the President to visit this city and shrine," Rhodes wrote early Tuesday.
The visit to Hiroshima Peace Park will come on May 27, when the president will be joined by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
"The President and his team will make this visit knowing that the open recognition of history is essential to understanding our shared past, the forces that shape the world we live in today, and the future that we seek for our children and grandchildren," Rhodes wrote.
