NY Times won't retract story, welcomes Trump lawsuit

The New York Times said Thursday that it wouldn't pull its story about two women who claim they were sexually harassed by Donald Trump, and said it would see Trump's team in court if the GOP nominee chooses to sue.

Trump’s legal team sent a letter to Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet demanding a retraction of the story, calling the story false and threatening to sue for libel if it wasn't retracted. But the Times rejected that demand.

“Nothing in our article has had the slightest effect on the reputation that Mr. Trump, through his own words and actions, has already created for himself,” read a letter in response from a lawyer for the Times.

The letter said the Times would not retract its story because it deals with a matter of “national importance” during an election year.

“We published newsworthy information about a subject of deep public concern,” the letter continued. “If Mr. Trump disagrees, if he believes that American citizens had no right to hear what these women had to say and that the law of this country forces us and those who would dare to criticize him to stand silent or be punished, we welcome the opportunity to have a court set him straight.”
