Are America’s most “sacred” institutions in jeopardy?
The night of May 2 served as a wake-up call to Americans that the governmental institutions they take for granted might be on the path to total degradation.
The first of these institutions likely to go down the tubes is the Supreme Court.
On May 2, 2022, a leak of a draft opinion hinting at the Supreme Court potentially overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision rocked the entire nation. Roe v. Wade initially legalized abortion nationwide and its potential repeal would kick abortion policymaking back to the states.
Politico published the leak, which Chief Justice John Roberts labeled as an “egregious breach of trust.”
“Although the document described in yesterday’s reports is authentic, it does not represent a decision by the Court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case,” Roberts declared in a statement.
“To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the Court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed. The work of the Court will not be affected in any way.”
The Chief Justice continued: “I have directed the Marshal of the Court to launch an investigation into the source of the leak.”
