Clinton lead cut in half

Hillary Clinton has seen a devastating drop in her lead over Republican opponent Donald Trump, according to a USA Today/Suffolk poll released on Monday, with the margin standing at less than half of where it stood two months ago.

According to the survey, Clinton now leads Trump by five points, 45.6 percent to 40.4 percent. That contrasts with this spring, when Clinton received support from 50 percent to Trump's 39 percent.

When Libertarian Gary Johnson and the Green Party's Jill Stein are added to the mix, Clinton's lead drops to four points, 39 percent to 35 percent for Trump. Johnson receives 8 percent and Stein wins 3 percent.

Trump leads by nine points among white voters, 47-38 percent, while Clinton leads among Hispanics by more than 2-1, a remarkably typical margin for a Democrat in a presidential contest, despite prevailing theories that Trump does better than other Republicans among whites and worse with minorities.

The results come after a tough weekend for Clinton, who spent nearly four hours interviewing with FBI officials at the agency's headquarters in Washington. Clinton has also faced questions about what issues were discussed at a meeting last week between President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who is responsible for overseeing the investigation into the Democratic candidate's conduct as secretary of state.
