After abortion scene, ‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington awarded ‘Woman of the Year’

This year the Hasty Pudding Institute has selected Scandal star Kerry Washington as their “Woman of the Year.” Washington will be presented with the award and a roast on Jan. 28 in Cambridge.

Washington is heralded for how she “broke barriers by becoming the first African American woman to headline a network TV drama since 1974.”

Despite the awards and accolades Washington has won, she and the show have also been criticized for perhaps the great “scandal” of all to occur during the mid-season finale.

In an episode titled “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” Washington’s character of Olivia Pope was seen aborting the president’s child while an even more inappropriate Christmas song for the episode, Silent Night, was playing in the background.

Washington, as well as the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, Live Action News notes, both publicly support Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.
