84 dead, 50 more wounded in attack in Nice, France

Approximately 84 people were killed and more than 50 others wounded Thursday night in Nice, France, according to French officials, when a large, white truck crashed into a crowd that had gathered to celebrate Bastille Day.

Speaking to the nation from Paris hours after the attack, French President Francois Hollande described what he called an "absolute horror" that was of a "terrorist nature," though by press time there was no confirmation the driver had ties to terrorism.

Hollande also called for a three-month extension of a state of emergency — put in place after last November's deadly Paris attacks — that was set to expire later this month.

At the time, just before 4 a.m. local time Friday, Hollande said there were 77 dead, including children. Hours later at around 8 a.m., the French Interior Ministry raised the number of dead to 84, with 18 others in critical condition.

At around 10:30 p.m. local time Thursday, a truck drove at high speed onto the Promenade des Anglais, where the celebration was being held. Hundreds of residents and tourists were seen running from the scene of the incident.
