Trump winning the youth vote in a critical swing state

The youth vote hasn’t always been kind to Republicans, especially Donald Trump — but new polling out of one critical swing state shows that some millennials may break for the billionaire.

A Des Moines Register poll released on Saturday showed Trump holding an impressive seven-point lead overall against Hillary Clinton; his lead was so large in fact that he was also beating the Democrat with millennial voters 43 to 38 percent.

According to the Register, one of the big reasons Clinton is failing to win over young voters in the Hawkeye State was because young liberals who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders in the primary have refused to cast their ballot for Clinton. The amount of young self-identified Democrats who promised to vote this election dropped from 33 percent in 2008 to 25 percent in 2016.

Adding to Trump’s coalition is his broad support from Republicans, non-college educated voters, men, independents, and middle-aged voters.

While there’s no telling if Bernie Sanders supporters sitting out will occur in other states, this is certainly good news for the Republicans. It shows that millennials may be liberal, but they aren’t as willing to play party politics as much as older voters.
