Poll finds GOP hemorrhaging Asian American voters

History may be doomed to repeat itself for the GOP, at least when it comes to Asian American voters. In 2012, Mitt Romney lost the demographic worst of all, earning only 26 percent of the Asian American vote. Trump may lose the demographic by even worse numbers.

Young Asian Americans spoke out against Trump, and warned that he would lose. These views are reflected in a recent survey, “Inclusion, Not Exclusion: Spring 2016 Asian American Voter Survey.”

According to the Executive Summary, “Asian Americans have, for nearly two decades, been the most rapidly growing racial group in the United States. More recently, they have also been growing significantly in their political presence,” with reference made to increased registered voters, congressional candidates, and voter registration organizations.

Also noted is “a growing interest in the opinions and priorities of this electorate.” Fifty-one percent are “more enthusiastic” about voting this year.

Voters are not merely fleeing the GOP, but running to the Democratic Party. “Exclusionary rhetoric is a likely cause” when it comes to these voters shifting in party identification towards the Democratic Party. The numbers are particularly telling for voters 18-34 years old.  By 12-73 percent, they have an unfavorable view of the GOP. Democrats see an almost exact flip, with 12 percent unfavorable and 77 percent favorable.
