Trump administration reaches limit it imposed of admitting 50,000 refugees

The U.S. government has reached the Trump administration's cap of admitting 50,000 refugees this fiscal year, the State Department announced Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, 50,086 refugees have been admitted since the budget year began last October.

The Obama administration had wanted to resettle 110,000 refugees from around the world, including a substantial number of Syrians fleeing the country's civil war, this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

President Trump revised that number as part of a January executive order that also sought to suspend the entire refugee resettlement program for 120 days. That order also imposed a temporary ban on entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries — later revised to six — but was blocked by various federal courts.

A Supreme Court order last month allowing President Trump to partially implement his travel ban meant that the 50,000 refugee limit could be enforced.
