Rand Paul vows to block John Bolton from State Dept.

While Democrats have threatened to block some of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet appointments, it may be one of his fellow Republicans who is actually successful.

Rumors have been swirling all weekend that Trump may tap former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton as the Deputy Secretary of State. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has vowed to fight against Bolton being appointed to any position in the State Department.

Unlike other members of Trump’s would-be cabinet, Bolton hasn’t moderated his positions to reflect the President-elect’s worldview better. For instance, Andrew Puzder, the potential new Labor Secretary, has walked back comments about replacing American workers with immigrants and robots.

Bolton has made no such concessions. He’s still refusing to admit that the Iraq War was a mistake.

“John Bolton doesn’t get it. He still believes in regime change. He’s still a big cheerleader for the Iraq War,” Paul said on ABC’s Sunday show This Week. “John Bolton is so far out of it and has such a naive understanding of the world.”
