Qatar remains steadfast to US partnership despite Trump's Twitter attack

Qatar's ambassador to the U.S. sent out a tweet reaffirming the countries' relationship and joint efforts to combat terrorism after President Trump applauded Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations for accusing Qatar of financing terrorism and cutting ties with their Middle Eastern neighbor.

"Qatar remains a strong US ally and strategic partner in anti-terrorism efforts, in the region and abroad," said Ambassador Sheikh Meshal Bin Hamad Al-Than in a tweet Thursday.

In a series of tweets earlier on Tuesday, Trump seemed to suggest that his recent visit to Saudi Arabia helped sway Arab leaders to distance themselves from Qatar.

"During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar – look!", he tweeted. "So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding … extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end of the horror of terrorism!"

Then, in an interview with the Daily Beast, the ambassador said it was "unfortunate" to see those tweets in spite of the partnership between Qatar and the U.S. to fight extremism.
