Johnson leads Clinton among independents, fueled by millennial support

A new Fox News poll reveals Donald Trump stumbling, Hillary Clinton staying flat, and Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson surging. Johnson appears to be the clear benefactor from Trump latest controversial statements and Clinton’s ongoing favorability issues among young voters.

In the last Fox News poll, Trump had a three point lead, but now he is losing to Clinton 39 percent to 36 percent. Why are both candidates in the thirties? Johnson, a former Governor of New Mexico, has surged to 12 percent.

Why? Johnson leads Clinton among independents, winning 23 percent to Clinton’s 22 percent. He is winning 14 percent of those who identify as “liberal,” presumable many Sanders supporters — continuing to support our coverage that many who #FeelTheBern are moving to #FeelTheJohnson.

According to the poll data, his latest uptick is directly attributable to his growth in support among millennials — taking support away from both Clinton and Trump. With voters under age 35, Johnson is polling at 18 percent, just 11 percent behind mainstream candidate Donald Trump at 29 percent and 20 points behind Clinton at 38 percent.

This poll is a low point for Clinton among young voters and a high point for Johnson. Last week, we reported numerous polls showing her at 40 percent or a little higher among millennials. Dipping below 40 percent is significant for her and for this race. Millennials are a heavily relied on base for the Democrat Party. President Obama won more than 60 percent of the youth vote in both of his elections, and if Clinton doesn’t raise her support among millennials, her path to victory greatly narrows.
